On this day in 1862, US President Abraham Lincoln signed the signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed enslaved workers in the US capitol city, about nine months prior to the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. Major socialist figure Karl Marx was in correspondence with Lincoln around this time, and we share that correspondence here along with some theoretical information related to chattel slavery versus wage slavery from a socialist/communist perspective.
