On this day in 1862, US President Abraham Lincoln signed the signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed enslaved workers in the US capitol city, about nine months prior to the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. Major socialist figure Karl Marx was in correspondence with Lincoln around this time, and we share that correspondence here along with some theoretical information related to chattel slavery versus wage slavery from a socialist/communist perspective. I’m a US American studying Marxism (anti-revisionist Marxism-Leninism).
I often post human-read audiobooks of socialist texts, & I organize them into playlists. I sometimes add comments to the text while reading, similar to making notes in a book, & I sometimes make efforts to explain difficult concepts in the texts, partly for myself & partly for newer listeners.
I also stream on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/socialisms4a) most Thursdays @ 1 PM Pacific/4 PM Eastern/7 PM UTC, & I later post the streams to YouTube. Stream dates & times are announced on the Community tab on YouTube & also on Bluesky, Mastodon, Tumblr, & Patreon.
